Confidence

Confidence is one of the five points of our star, which are the fundamental values we maintain and encourage at Inspired, but what is Confidence?

For us having confidence is being able to comfortably challenge yourself to achieve bigger and better things. This may be fighting in your first competition even though you were a little nervous or scared, or going to your belt grading and trying your best even if you’re worried about it. More importantly we believe that everybody has the potential, the ability for confidence. Some just have trouble showing it and that’s where we can help.

By building a relaxed, encouraging atmosphere where everybody is supportive and friendly, students can feel safe and inspired to challenge themselves and exceed in areas where they perhaps wouldn’t have before. In fact studies show that children with a higher level of self-confidence at a young age will go on to gain higher-wage jobs and get promoted quicker. There is an abundance of benefits to having confidence from having a sunnier outlook on life to being more motivated to achieve your goals whatever they may be.

The five points of the start aren’t just some words put around a star; they are our promise to you. A promise that we will follow and teach these values in everything we do, making it easier for students to learn and pick up these traits in which we believe, and helping our students develop into successful young individuals.

A child who is involved in martial arts is generally a child who is confident in themselves. Working through a martial art and the belt ranking system gives measurable goals to follow that are realistic to attain. The sense of accomplishment a child feels by mastering a new technique or graduating to a new belt follows them everywhere they go.

Respect

One of the five points of our star is RESPECT. This is key to Martial Arts as it ties in with discipline and can become an important life skill. We teach our students not only to respect the instructors but also their surroundings and fellow students. And most importantly we encourage self-respect in our students, as we believe that to flourish as an individual this is the first step. In turn this leads to confidence and with confidence our students will achieve their goals and turn dreams to reality. Something that at first seems more difficult than climbing a mountain becomes a challenge they strive to complete.

The application of respect in martial arts takes many forms in various degrees of severity. The fundamental rules we apply to our classes are bowing upon entering and exiting the training hall as a sign of respect to the facility staff and students, facing away from the front when adjusting your belt in lines and bowing as a class to begin and end every lesson. These rules don’t just apply to our students but equally to the instructors as we believe in leading by example, this is why we bow to each other when handing over a lesson or receiving instructions.

Martial arts are all about respect. Punching, kicking, throwing and locking are all secondary to the respect that is shown from the moment you walk into a dojo. Children learn to bow to the masters who came before them, and to their current instructors. They also learn to treat other students as they wish to be treated. Experienced instructors press upon the respect issue regularly and teach students to practise respect for self, parents, teachers and peers at every opportunity.

Discipline

A major point of our star and a key point to all martial arts is Discipline. Self-discipline is an important area for any growing child to develop and martial arts is a great method of teaching it as it allows them not to just do something but also to take the time to consider their actions and justify if it is in fact the right thing to do.

Self-discipline will also be key in a student’s progression in martial arts as having high self-discipline will lead them to train more frequently with more structure, heightening their ability as a martial artist.

Having discipline will also help a student in knowing when and where is appropriate to use their martial arts as of course it is only taught as a method of self defence and a way to hone the body and mind.

Finally we believe discipline links in with all of our other points meaning having discipline will lead you to be able to focus more on your goals, gain more confidence and respect while boosting your chances of being successful.

Martial arts help instil mental focus in your child, giving the ability to concentrate on a task and see it through to its conclusion. The discipline that is taught in the dojo in regard to uniforms, customs and techniques often translates into other areas of life, including school and household chores.

Focus

The ability to truly focus is a great skill and will aid anyone in achieving their goals, making it an important point of our star. Focusing can help build your self-discipline and keep you on track for your main goal instead of getting side-tracked by all the little things because they seem easier. It’s easy to push a big goal aside because it seems difficult, but with enough focus you can stay aimed at the important goal without being swayed.

Learning focus in martial arts can help in all areas of life such as school. For example if a student has trouble focusing in lessons we find that after a period of participating in martial arts parents tell us that their children’s school work has improved and that they tend to show increased focus and discipline.

To us, focusing is more than just paying close attention to something, it’s analysing and sticking to a goal you’re aiming for. Following this belief we help students to focus on their goals and provide all the support in our power to help them achieve them, the most prominent example being their belt testings. We as a club will always strive to make sure every single individual student feels confident about their grading and believe they have been given an abundance of the appropriate training and support.

Success

Success is a summary of all our key points of the star: it is what you can achieve by following all the points. More so it is what we aim to give you within the best of our ability.

Gaining more self-confidence is a success because it will enrich your life experience and let you stand out in a way which will allow you to achieve more in all aspects of life.

Gaining more focus will allow you to follow your goal no matter how difficult it may be so you can achieve in the area you really want to, as well as gain the satisfaction of accomplishing something you really wanted to and all the great feelings and pride that follow.

Gaining more self-discipline will help you stay strong in facing your goals and all the hard work it may entail, motivating yourself and trusting in your abilities to know that at some point near or far you will reach that goal no matter what.

Gaining more self-respect will boost your confidence, self-esteem and make you feel great about yourself. This is an excellent foundation to work from when aiming for anything you wish to achieve or even just for enjoying life more in general.

When practising and applying the five points of the star we know from experience that our students become more successful and achieve more with a more determined outlook and approach to their goals.

Students will achieve and feel success when gaining the next belt grade or winning a trophy at a competition. They will feel success during a class when learning a new technique or getting Superstar of the class for the effort and determination put in during that class. We put in place what we can to encourage the children to strive for that success, be it getting their next grade or working hard during the class to earn the Superstar.
